Once upon a time there was a bright idea and a pile of lumber! As the idea took shape into numbers, measurements, colors, a theme and a vision, the team went to work to bring it all to life.  The first step was to build two sections of one large barn-styled wall. I remember hearing the comment "I didn't know it would be THIS big!!" after we placed the first few face boards onto the framework. :-)

After building the two sections of the backdrop, the team temporarily attached them in the middle so they could finish the job. Finishing the job included painting the backdrop red and adding white trim pieces. It was vital to make sure the two sections could be moved separately without loosing or breaking any of the trim pieces.

The stage was entered in the 2012 Leiper's Fork Chili Cookoff as "Grand Ole Chili" in the showmanship division and the chili was called the Grand Ole Chili. The chili was entered in the Strictly Scratch & the People's Choice Divisions but did not take home any awards. However, the team dressed up as country music stars and played their parts while handing out samples of chili and entertaining the guests that came out to participate. The team and scene won the Showmanship award for their Grand Ole Chili entry.

Dolly entered her Salsa in the Salsa Division and took home 1st place as well!

After the 2012 Chili Cookoff, a storm containing high winds swept through the Leiper's Fork Village and heavily damaged the Grand Ole Chili stage scene.  The photo on the left above is what it looked like after being erected in preparation for the 2014 GRAND OL' CHILI COOKOFF Event.  Repairs had to be made and plans to expand the stage were already underway. The photo on the right shows the final repairs and the addition of wings on each side of the stage.  The wings really made the stage look like a full fledged barn!

The GRAND OL' CHILI COOKOFF committee members were all involved with the Leiper's Fork Yard Sale (mud bogg) that took place one week prior to the Chili Cookoff and were so happy to finally see the sun shine! The massive amount of rain the Village received during a 2 week period caused major issues with the execution of these two events. One of the problems was the paint applied to the backdrop of the stage just slid right off one night due to the dew and the large amounts of moisture in the air.  Thankfully, we have professional painters in our volunteer pool and they knew just what to do and took care of the problem. The stage and barn scene turned out beautiful and looked amazing sitting in the field surrounded by hay bails and landscaping materials provided by Rock Creek Landscaping and Garden Center located in Franklin, TN.

We hung the banner for our main sponsor, Middle Tennessee Hot Air Adventures, and introduced our first performers, The Austin Brothers. They look amazing on the stage! While the Austin Brothers were entertaining the chili tasters and the chili cooks, we received a short visit from the Governor of Tennessee, Governor Bill Haslam! He looks amazing on our stage too!!

The second band was Clay Anderson and his band and they look amazing too! The show was closed by Johnny Mac & the Heart Attacks! Man, what a wonderful day!!

Plans are in the early stages for the 2015 GRAND OL' CHILI COOKOFF and we are discussing expanding the stage and barn scene once again and the suggestion to construct a "green room" for our performers and special guests has been thrown out there. Stay tuned to see what becomes of it!
